What is Starlink Internet and Can You Use It in Your RV?

Starlink is a low latency broadband internet delivered via satellite. SpaceX (where Elon Musk is CEO) developed Starlink. Unlike traditional satellite internet providers, Starlink provides blazing speeds. Part of the reason for these blazing speeds is that Starlink satellites are much closer to earth than the legacy satellite systems used by ViaSat and HughesNet.

Can Starlink work with an RV?

Maybe. But, things get a bit tricky. Technically, setting up the Starlink terminal at your campsite should work. But, per the Starlink Beta Terms of Service, one is supposed to install the Starlink terminal at a fixed location. The Terms of Service also require that Starlink be used at the Service Address on your Starlink account.

Additionally, Starlink lacks the additional FCC licenses to support moving platforms such as RVs in transit or boats.

As customers begin to try Starlink for their RVs, we will update this article.

Can I use Starlink outside of the United States?

While SpaceX has extensive plans for Starlink, Starlink is currently only available to US customers. However, Canada appears to be the next Starlink service area.

How fast is Starlink?

SpaceX said that users should “[e]xpect to see data speeds vary from 50Mb/s to 150Mb/s and latency from 20ms to 40ms over the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system.”

Some Reddit users have seen speeds north of 200Mb/s. Other Reddit users pointed out the beta service is 600x faster than their current internet solution.

Just how fast is 200Mb/s a second? Zoom and Netflix, at the same time, won’t be a problem.

How much does Starlink cost? How do I sign up?

Starlink is currently in private beta, aptly named “Better Than Nothing Beta Program.” The initial pricing of $499 includes all equipment such as the mounting kit, receiver dish, and router with WiFi. The ongoing fee is $99/month.

How do I sign up for Starlink?

You can try your luck at getting a beta invite by going to Starlink.com and submitting your email address. The initial beta testers selected came from users who previously signed up for Starlink updates.

Is Starlink recommended for RV use?

At this time, no. The technology is still premature for mass adoption, and Starlink’s enforcement of their Terms of Service is unclear. Fortunately, Starlink is quickly scaling the service and coverage (by increasing the number of satellites).
