It’s Not all About the Slopes: Hidden Gems in Colorado

When dreaming about a road trip out west, Colorado is one of the first states that comes to mind. Colorado is famous for its world-class skiing, but there is much more to do and see in this colorful state. Don’t miss these hidden gems in Colorado!

Great Sand Dunes National Park

This spot is probably the most well known out of the two places in this article. Great Sand Dunes National Park is located in the southern part of the state. The park is located off of Highway 150 in Mosca, CO. This National Park is quite unique as it has large natural formed sand dunes that you can climb by foot. These sand dunes were formed by wind and are insanely fun to slide down or sandboard down. Visitors can rent sand sleds or sand snowboards at the gas station before the entrance.

It’s important to know that you have to wade a shallow river to get to the sand dunes. It is recommended to not wear shoes or socks when climbing the dunes. Be prepared to get sand all over your clothes and whatever you may bring with you to the dunes. In the summertime, various water activities can be enjoyed at the river in front of the dunes. Stop at the visitors center to get latest conditions.

Camping near the dunes

There is a number of campsites in and outside of the park. Pinon flats campground is located in the park, but has no hookups. Campgrounds with hookups include Oasis Campground, Zapata Falls Campground, San Luis Lakes State Wildlife Area Campgrounds, and KOA Alamosa. National parks are always a great idea when traveling in an RV, read a review about the national park pass here.

Escalante Canyon

Escalante Canyon is a wonderful true hidden gem located on the western slope of Colorado. This spot can be found driving from Montrose, CO, to Grand Junction, CO, off the beaten path located in Delta, CO. Escalante Canyon is 200,000+ acres of national conservation area.

Turning off the highway into this canyon is uneventful at first, but its well worth it to keep driving! Along the main road, one can find historic cabins built by a civil war captain and many other historical figures. Deep in the canyon, there are shallow creeks and spots to cool off and wade in the water during summer time. Be aware that after mile 17, four wheel drive is required. No worries if your rig is only two wheel drive, there is plenty to enjoy up until this point.
