Best RV Rental Companies: A Comparison

You might be wondering what are the best RV rental companies out there. Well, we’re one of them so we wanted to give to the full scoop on some points of comparison between us. We sent out our millionth trip this year and we’ve been in the business of reconnecting people with the outdoors since 2015.

Over the years, we’ve gotten a lot of questions from both aspiring and seasoned RV renters.

Questions like:

  • How does Outdoorsy work?
  • Are you legit?
  • What are your RV rental prices like?
  • How is Outdoorsy different from competitors?

Don’t worry, we hear you! You’ve asked the questions and now we want to answer them. That’s why we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to what you can expect from Outdoorsy, as well as how we differ from our top competitors. Let’s dive in!

1. Outdoorsy Reviews

Outdoorsy is the largest and safest community-driven RV marketplace for renting RVs directly from local RV owners. We don’t own a fleet of identical, anonymous RVs with giant billboards down the side and a million miles on the odometer. Instead, we connect RV owners with folks who want to experience the RV life without having to own one themselves.

That’s what makes us one of the best RV rental companies out there today.

Why should you rent from Outdoorsy?

1. You can rest easy knowing that we have your back with top-notch RV insurance

Backed by one of the world’s most trusted insurance companies, Assurant*, we are proud to offer our RV owners and renters peace of mind with the following insurance coverages:

  • Up to $1 million liability insurance in the US
  • Up to $1 million in physical damage protection
  • Interior Damage Protection
  • Windshield Damage Repair
  • Trip Cancellation Coverage
  • Driver Verification Checks
  • 24/7 Roadside Assistance
  • 24/7 Live Customer Support Safe & Secure Payments

And with our three different package options (Essential, Preferred, or Peace of Mind), you can choose the protection that’s right for your trip.

2. We’re obsessed with our customers (not in a creepy way)

Whatever’s going on, our A+ Customer Support team is waiting to help you work it out.

3. Nervous about driving or towing an RV? Try our on-site delivery option.

Why order pizza when you can order an RV instead? Outdoorsy offers renters the option to have their RV delivered to the campsite, set up on-site, and picked back up at the end of your trip.

How’s that for ultimate relaxation?

4. After 5 years in business, we still have a 93% 5-star rating.

Outdoorsy RV Rental Costs

Since Outdoorsy’s RVs are rented out by individual owners, costs can vary. RV rental prices can change based on:

  • Rental market location
  • Seasonality
  • Type of RV

You can’t fully control pricing factors like location or seasonality, but you can control what type of rig you get. Here are some common price ranges based on RV type:

Average RV rental prices by type:

  • Class A: $175 to $275 per night
  • Class B: $100 to $200 per night
  • Class C: $150 to $200 per night
  • Travel Trailer: $50 to $125 per night
  • Fifth Wheel: $60 to $150 per night
  • Pop Up Trailer: $50 to $100 per night

We have some pretty cool RVs in every size category, so check out what might work for you and your trip with Outdoorsy RV rentals.

2. RVShare Reviews

RVShare is another peer-to-peer marketplace where travelers can rent RVs from individual owners. Let’s find out more about RVShare and how they differ from Outdoorsy.

RVShare Features:

  • Fully online-booking
  • Up To $500,000 Liability* & $200,000 RV Value Coverage Insurance
  • 24/7 RV Rental Roadside Assistance
  • 5% Cash-Back Loyalty Program

*Can go up to $1,000,000 if you pay the higher fee

What RVShare Does Well

Their cash-back loyalty program is really interesting and a great way to engage customers.

How RVShare Can Improve

Perks like the cash-back loyalty program are great, but they don’t really make up for cons like lack-luster insurance coverage or less-than-great customer reviews.

Improvement opportunities:

  • Increase RV insurance coverage options
  • Make customer service a higher priority

Average RVShare Pricing

  • Class A: $150 to $450 per night
  • Class B: $100 to $350 per night
  • Class C: $100 to $400 per night
  • Travel Trailer: $50 to $200 per night
  • Fifth Wheel: $60 to $300 per night
  • Pop Up Trailer: $50 to $100 per night

3. Cruise America Reviews

Unlike Outdoorsy, Cruise America is not a rental marketplace, but a corporate RV rental company with dealerships across the U.S. and Canada.

How is this different from a peer-to-peer marketplace?

  • You don’t get to connect with individual RV owners. This means you don’t get the luxury of having the owner walk you through test drives or go over features and other important info. It also means you won’t have that convenient contact to reach out to should you need help during your trip.
  • The level of service and accountability is higher on peer-to-peer marketplaces. Outdoorsy holds its RV owners to really high standards so that renters can have the best experience possible. So when you rent from Outdoorsy, you’re getting the best of the best. Bigger, more corporate dealerships are harder to hold accountable for poor quality or service.
  • Your rental from a corporate dealership is not discreet. Don’t want everyone to know you’re a tourist? Too bad! Rentals from dealerships like Cruise America typically come with advertising/branding wrapped onto the vehicles.

Cruise America Pricing

Cruise America rental pricing varies based on your specific trip, so it’s hard to offer up price ranges. However, most trips cost at least $100 per night. Unfortunately, Cruise America also tacks on a price per mile of $0.35. It doesn’t sound like much, but that mileage pricing could mean additional hundreds of dollars depending on your destination.

They also charge extra for things like kitchen utensils and bedding. Yikes.

BBB Rating:

Cruise America Customer Reviews:

Unfortunately, Cruise America’s processes can be a little impersonal which results in less-than-stellar customer service. Check out some recent customer experiences.

*Assurant is a partner for liability insurance only.

Josh and his wife gallivanted all over the country in an '88 Airstream for 4+ years of full-time RVing. They made an unexpected pitstop in Montana in 2020 and haven't left since. That's because they got hooked on the glamping resort they run by Glacier National Park. Fittingly, they keep up their RVing love by renting out vintage Airstreams and other retro RVs to travelers hitting Montana.
